Mathematics at St Mary's

Intent

At St Mary’s, we believe that Maths is a subject that can be and should be enjoyable, intriguing, challenging and inspiring. Our curriculum is designed to help you to develop competence and fluency, whilst nurturing a sense of curiosity and a love of Maths. We endeavour for all children to:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics so that you develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • Be able to apply your skills to solving increasingly sophisticated problems
  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and develop and present a justification, argument or proof using mathematical language
  • Have an appreciation of number and number operations, which enables mental calculations and written procedures to be performed efficiently and fluently.

Implementation

  • Daily lessons are taught, in all year groups, using White Rose Maths resources.
  • Learning is broken down into small steps and interventions are quickly put in place to ensure ‘no child falls behind’.
  • Daily 'Flashback 4'  allows children to practise and consolidate previously taught skills and procedures.
  • Mastering Number is used in EYFS and Key Stage 1 to teach fluency in number facts.
  • Number Sense is used to provide a uniform approach to the teaching of times tables in KS2.
  • Manipulatives are used in lessons by all children to support learning and aid reasoning.
  • ‘Working walls’ provide key information, key vocabulary and modelled examples.

Impact

We strive to ensure that children leave St Mary's with:

  • an understanding of the importance of maths in everyday life.
  • fluent recall key number facts and times tables.
  • the ability to make connections between mathematical concepts.
  • resilience when solving problems.
  • the ability to reason mathematically and explain their thinking.
  • AND MOST IMPORTANTLY - A LOVE OF MATHS!
